Your First Ortho-K Appointment in Melbourne: What to Expect
Taking the First Step Towards Clearer Vision
If you’re considering Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) in Melbourne for yourself or your child, booking your first appointment is the most important step. Many patients — especially parents seeking myopia control for kids — feel nervous simply because they don’t know what to expect. Here at Twenty Times Two in Wheelers Hill we’ve designed our Ortho-K process to be comfortable, informative, and tailored to your unique eyes. By the end of your first assessment, you’ll know if Ortho-K is the right choice — and you’ll leave with a clear plan for achieving better vision without glasses or daytime contact lenses.
Initial Discussion

When you arrive at our Wheelers Hill optometry clinic, our friendly team will greet you and take a few details before starting with a relaxed conversation about your or your child’s vision history, lifestyle needs such as school, sports, or work, and any previous experience with contact lenses or eye treatments. This discussion helps us understand your goals and how orthokeratology could fit seamlessly into your life.
Comprehensive Eye Examination

We check your eyes very carefully to make sure Ortho-K will work for you and to design lenses that fit perfectly. First, we find out exactly what glasses strength you need. Then, we use a special camera to take a picture of the front of your eye, showing its shape like a map. We also look at how big your pupils are in light and dark, how your eyelids and blinking work, and if your eyes are wet enough to keep the lenses comfortable. We shine a light to check the health of your eyes inside and out, and for kids, we sometimes measure the length of the eye to see how it changes over time. Why it matters: Everyone’s eyes are different, so we use these tests to make lenses that fit your eyes just right and help you see clearly without glasses during the day.
Understanding Ortho-K

We’ll explain exactly what Ortho-K lenses are and how they work their magic while you sleep. These special lenses gently change the shape of the front of your eye overnight, so when you wake up and take them out, you can see clearly all day without glasses. We’ll talk about what results you can expect, how long it might take for your vision to improve, and what you’ll notice along the way. We’ll also show you the safest way to put the lenses in, take them out, and keep them clean so your eyes stay healthy. And of course, you can ask as many questions as you like—we want you (and your parents) to feel happy and confident before we begin.
Lens Fitting and Trial (If Suitable)

If our tests show that Ortho-K is a great match for your eyes, we’ll order special lenses made just for you. Sometimes, we can even try a pair on the same day so you can see how they feel and how easy they are to put in and take out. Lots of our young patients enjoy this step because it helps them feel more confident before they take the lenses home.
Your Personalised Ortho-K Plan
Before you leave, we’ll give you a clear plan made just for you. It will explain how to use and look after your lenses, and when to come back for check-ups. Usually, we see you the morning after your first night of wear, then again at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months, to make sure everything is going perfectly.
How Long Does the First Appointment Take?
Your first visit usually takes about one to one and a half hours. This gives us enough time to check your eyes carefully, try the lenses if possible, and answer all your questions so you feel ready to start.
Preparing for Your First Appointment
To help us get the best results, please bring your glasses or current contact lenses. If you wear soft contact lenses, don’t wear them for at least one day before your visit. If you use hard lenses, you may need to leave them out for longer—just ask us and we’ll let you know exactly how long.
